The Final Countdown. By Charles C. Ryrie. Wheaton, IL: Scripture Press Publications, Victor Books, 1982. 120 pp. Paper, $3.95.

This is a revision and updating of The Bible and Tomorrows News. Those familiar with the former title are well aware of its superb value as a survey of Bible prophecy which is sound, concise, practical, readable, and enjoyable, traits which characterize Ryrie’s style. Christian laymen will find the book helpful both as an introduction and as a review of biblical prophecy. The effectiveness of this book for group study is increased by the availability of an accompanying leader’s guide.

Handmaid to Theology: An Essay in Philosophical Prolegomena. By Winfried Corduan. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1981. 184 pp. Paper, $7.95.

Corduan defines “prolegomena” as “a preparatory study laying down basic principles or the groundwork for further exploration of a particular discipline” (p. 13). He considers his work “a prolegomena to systematic theology” (p. 13) which “is intended to rehabilitate philosophy to her proper role as handmaid to theology” (p. 10). This he does in a competent and thorough way.

Norman L. Geisler, of Dallas Seminary, has written the Foreword to the book. He asserts, “The author’s presuppositions are thoroughly evangelical” (p. 7), an assertion that the book amply confirms. Corduan provides philosophical presuppositions for the propositional, verbal revelation of God to men in the Bible and for the inerrancy in the Scriptures. A brief bibliography and a subject index are provided in this handy volume.

Theological prolegomena as a distinct study has not received much attention recently. This work has taken a stride toward restoring this subject to its rightful place.
