Changing of the Guard

With this issue, Dr. John F Walvoord completes 33 years of faithful ministry as the editor of Bibliotheca Sacra, Dallas Theological Seminary’s theological journal. With the January 1986 issue, Dr. Roy B. Zuck, who has served on the Bibliotheca Sacra editorial staff for 11 years, will assume the position of editor.

Dr. Walvoord’s work as editor of the journal coincides with his presidency of Dallas Seminary. He was appointed the school’s president and the journal’s editor in 1952 on the death of Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer, the Seminary’s founder and first president.

Having begun in 1843, Bibliotheca Sacra is the oldest theological journal in the Western hemisphere. It has been in continuous publication for 142 years. Dallas Seminary acquired the journal in 1934. Dr. Rollin Thomas Chafer, Lewis Chafer’s brother, edited the journal from 1934 through 1939; Lewis Sperry Chafer edited the journal from 1940 to 1952, and Dr. Walvoord has been editor since 1952.

Dr. Zuck, academic dean and professor of Bible exposition, was associate editor from 1974 through 1984 and managing editor in 1985. His loyalty to the inerrant Scriptures and to the doctrinal position of Dallas Seminary will help ensure the continuation of Bibliotheca Sacra as an evangelical, theologically conservative journal.

Other editorial staff personnel include Mr. James H. Thames, editorial assistant, who began in January 1985, and Dr. F. Duane Lindsey, assistant editor, whose duties will begin with the January 1986 issue. Dr. Lindsey has served as Book Review editor since 1968, and will continue in that position as well. He is also registrar and assistant professor of systematic theology.

Bibliotheca Sacra has one of the largest circulations of theological journals published today. Its relatively low subscription price makes it one of the least expensive journals of its kind in circulation. Its readers include scholars, pastors, other full-time Christian workers, students, and serious lay Bible students. This journal is committed to providing biblical and theological instruction with emphasis on Bible exposition and discussions of current theological and ethical issues. Periodical reviews and book reviews are included in each issue.
