Bibliotheca Sacra’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary

Roy B. Zuck

[Roy B. Zuck is Chairman and Senior Professor of Bible Exposition, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Editor of Bibliotheca Sacra.]

The year 1993 marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of Bibliotheca Sacra. In continuous publication for 150 years, this quarterly periodical stands as the oldest theological journal in the Western Hemisphere.

With deep gratitude to God, the Bibliotheca Sacra editorial staff and the administration and faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary acknowledge the Lord’s hand on this publication over these many years. From its beginning in 1843 to the present day, Bibliotheca Sacra has maintained an uncompromising position as a conservative theological journal. It is recognized around the world as a leading voice for evangelical biblical scholarship.

Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of Bibliotheca Sacra

In celebrating this unique milestone in the history of evangelical publishing, the four issues in 1993 will include reprints of articles written by four of the previous editors. In this issue “The Resurrection and Ascension of Our Lord” is by the journal’s first editor, Edward Robinson. It originally appeared in Bibliotheca Sacra in February 1845.

The April issue will include “The Genuineness of the Pastoral Epistles,” first published in Bibliotheca Sacra in April 1851 and written by Bela Bates Edwards, the journal’s second editor.

Lewis Sperry Chafer, the founder and first president of Dallas Theological Seminary, was the quarterly’s seventh editor. His article, “The Doctrine of Sin,” printed in 1935, will appear in the July 1993 issue. “The Theological Context of Premillennialism,”

by John F. Walvoord, published in July 1951, will be reprinted in the October issue. He was the second president of Dallas Seminary and the journal’s eighth editor.

These articles, reprinted without editing, will give readers an appreciation of the strong biblical heritage that has characterized Bibliotheca Sacra from its inception. Interestingly some of the theological issues debated decades ago still concern evangelicals today. These articles are selected as a sampling of what Bibliotheca Sacra readers enjoyed in past years.

Also in recognition of the sesquicentennial year, Bibliotheca Sacra now has a new page format and cover design. We trust these changes will be pleasing to the eye in addition to signaling this unique historical milestone.
