AFFILIATION (uh-fil-ee-AY-shuhn): the relationship of a local church to a group of co-operating churches (association, convention, or conference); through multiple affiliation a church may participate in local, state, or national associations and may discontinue affiliation at any time for any reason; affiliation refers to relationship without connectionalism in that an affiliating church does not thereby join either its membership, its assets, or its program to that of the association, or denomination; a church voting to affiliate is not considered in affiliation until received by the association through vote; affiliation does not necessarily commit the local church to the support of the association or cooperative fellowship unless support is specified by the association constitution but may be voluntarily determined thereafter, including the extent of participation intended; properly, churches affiliate with associations, conventions, or conferences, but do not affiliate with service agencies or societies even though they may participate through channels in the management thereof.

AGENCY (AY-jen-see): an independent agent established and maintained to perform a specialized task, to serve local churches if and as they wish; examples: Minnesota Baptist Convention, Central C.B. Seminary, an old people’s home, offices of a mission board; an agency should remain dependent on local churches for support and thus be responsible to local churches; all agencies are humanly instituted, never to be equated with churches, which are divinely instituted.

AMILLENNIALIST (ah-mi-LEN-i-al-ist): one who does not (a) believe in a literal reign of Christ on earth but considers that all prophecy of Scripture is fulfilled allegorically in the church age; one who considers that the end of this world and final judgment by Christ may come without any further major fulfilment of prophecy or dispensational periods.

ANNUAL MEETINGS (AN-yoo-uhl MEE-tings): gatherings of a church or association for business or inspiration, reporting for the entire previous year and planning for the entire coming year.

APOSTASY (uh-PAHS-tuh-si): turning from the fundamental doctrines of the Word to teachings based on science, philosophy, or even emotion; an apostate having once held sound doctrine may or may not actually be regenerated.
