Overcoming Life’s Toughest Problems by Ed Hindson, Eugene, OR: Harvest House, 1999, 173 pp., paperback, $9.99

Hindson is one of the most creative Bible scholars in America today. In this paperback he shows a real concern for the basic issues of the Christian walk. He deals with problems such as personal confidence, emotions, and depression. Too, he discusses how to find direction in life, and as well, inner peace and strength.

Hindson gives biblical principles not simply pat answers. He writes “God has spoken to us in the inspired pages of His Word. There we find divine guidance for the problems of life. And it is there that we receive the assurance of His grace to see us through. No matter what you may be facing, God is there to help you.”

I was a little disappointed in chapter 4 entitled “Dealing With Depression.” While he argues that some may have depression for physical reasons (low blood sugar), I’ve found that most instances of depression are spiritual in nature, mainly a lack of trust in what God says about life and other issues. Too, Hindson switches on some secular psychological language such as “sublimate,” “defense mechanisms,” etc. He redeemed himself somewhat by noting “in the area of dealing with guilt…Christian theology and secular psychology have their greatest conflict.” And then adds, “We believe that real guilt arises from sinful actions that can only be truly forgiven by God.”

Overall, the book is simple, in the good sense, and practical. And except for a few places, it is extremely biblical. He concludes, “Even in life’s worst moments, God is always nearer to us than we will ever know. No problem is beyond His ability to handle.” With the reservations mentioned, the book is worth the price.

Before the Last Battle—Armageddon by Arthur E. Bloomfield, Minneapolis, MN: Bethany House Publishers, 1998, 238 pp., paperback, $9.99

This is an older reprint that contains all the essentials of Bible prophecy. It is a recap of the prophetic scenario. There are some unusual sections and chapters that are worthy of note, such as the author’s “Consummation of All Things” chart and his section on The Structure of Prophecy. In chapter 2, he also does an interesting word study on five key prophetic terms: appear (optomai), come (erchomai), appear (epiphainō
