Ten Lies about God: and How You May Already Be Deceived By Erwin W. Lutzer, Nashville; Word, 2000. 238 pages, cloth. $19.99.

Erwin Lutzer, the pastor of Moody Memorial Church, is well-known as a writer of numerous books, a radio speaker on the Moody network, and an outstanding conference speaker. He is also a close friend from the time of our student days at Dallas Theological Seminary. Erwin grew up on a farm in the wheat fields of the Canadian prairies and spent hours as a teenager memorizing many books of the Bible as he drove a tractor. From his youth on he developed a through knowledge of the Bible. He is best known as a preacher who has an outstanding ability to communicate God’s truth in a clear and powerful way so that all can grasp it. But he also has a penetrating theological grasp of biblical doctrine and has an advanced degree in philosophy.

A. W. Tozer said that what we believe about God is the most important thing about us. This book is a wonderful book about the character and perfections of God. It reminds me in many ways of J. I. The disturbing thing is that many professing evangelicals have been deceived and have strayed from the grandeur and perfection of the God revealed in the Bible.

The ten lies Lutzer deals with are as follows:

Lie 1: God is whatever we want Him to be.

Lie 2: Many paths lead into God’s presence.

Lie 3: God is more tolerant than He used to be.

Lie 4: God has never personally suffered.

Lie 5: God is obligated to save followers of other religions.

Lie 6: God takes no responsibility for natural disasters.

Lie 7: God does not know our decisions before we make them.

Lie 8: The fall ruined God’s plan.

Lie 9: We must choose between God’s pleasures and our own.

Lie 10: God helps those who help themselves.

These are not easy issues. Some are issues that Christians face when dealing with non-Christians. “God is whatever we want Him to be.” “There are many paths to God.” “God will save sincere followers of all religions.” Some...
