Dobson Warns about Beijing Conference

James Dobson, President of Focus on the Family, issued a chilling warning about the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, occuring August 30-September 15, 1995. In his August newsletter, Dobson said, “Most of what Christianity stands for will be challenged during this atheistic conference… And if they have their way, the family as it has been known since antiquity will cease to exist” (p. 1).

The official UN document for this conference, Dobson notes, was written by radical feminists. “Marriage is seen as the root of all evil for women… Men are seen as oppressors and exploiters whom women should regard as lifelong enemies” (p. 3). The central ideology of the UN document, with the support of the U.S. governmen, is “gender feminism.” According to gender feminism, all differences in male and female roles are imposed on children by society.

Advocates of this view “want to dissolve the traditional roles of mothers and fathers. They also hope to eliminate such terms as wife, husband, son, daughtermanhood, womanhood, masculine and feminine.” (p. 3). Dobson continues, “Homosexual and lesbian rights are central to the philosophy driving the conference…the goal is to give members of the human family five genders from which to choose instead of two… a person can decide whether to be male, female, homsexual, lesbian, or transgendered…. For women, however, the preferred love relationship is lesbian in nature. In that way male oppressiveness can be negated” (p. 4).

Why does this concern CBMW? It shows us what is at stake. When a society abandons Biblical standards of manhood and womanhood, it soon finds there are no other absolute standards available. This is no time for Christians to be silent or to say that the Bible’s teachings on manhood and womanhood are confusing and unclear! The same God who authored the Bible is the Creator of every person on earth, and his Word says, “male and female he created them…and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:27, 31). The Bible defines distinct roles and responsibilities for men and women, and they are good because they come from our Creator.

The stakes are high, for if the Christian church abandons these Biblical standards, then there will be no valid moral absolutes available for society. This is because, apart from the Bible, there is no set of standards for human conduct that is absolutely true and right. God’s Word is “a lamp shining in a dark place” (2 Pet. 1:19). There are only two choices today: return to Biblical standards, or wander in a sea of moral confusion and a thousand competing personal opinions, some...
