Sexual Fidelity: No Compromise by Mike Abendroth. West Boylston, MA: NoCo Media, 2016. 127 pp., paper, $11.99.

Abendroth is the pastor of Bethlehem Bible Church and is the author of a handful of books including Discovering Romans (Zondervan, 2014). Sexual Fidelity has thirty short chapters and is designed as a thirty-day study on various issues concerning sex. The book developed from some talks the author had with his son, and covers topics from dating/courtship to homosexuality. There is nothing crude; it is tastefully composed. Neither is it a “how-to” book. There are no diagrams.

Happily he gets right to the heart of the matter right from the start. “Sex is not the problem – the depravity of mankind is” (p. 5). The work is full of other great pieces of wisdom. A Christian should flee sexual immorality. Do not make excuses or try to justify sexual sin as if one could circumvent the Bible. Practical suggestions are given on talking to children about sex. Sexual sin (1) hurts one’s body, (2) does not make a Christian more godly, and (3) enslaves more than almost any other type of sin. To deal with sexual sin, people need the gospel, not guilt trips, that is, they need to recall what God has done for them. Even this kind of sin can be forgiven.

Abendroth emphasizes sex is for the mutual pleasure of a husband and wife and not just for procreation. He devoted an entire chapter (rightly so) to the evils of pornography. In the chapter on homosexuality, he stated telling someone about Jesus is not hate speech; rather, that is practically the most loving thing a believer can say to another person. Abendroth’s work is Scripture-filled and is a good starting point for the subject of sexuality.

David J. MacLeod serves as a professor of Bible and theology at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa. His book The Suffering Servant of the Lord: A Prophecy of Jesus Christ is “the first Emmaus Journal Monograph, a series of expositions on the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah (p. vii).” MacLeod’s work is a collection of lectures and sermons given by the author over the years, edited and expanded for publication.
