What You Believe and Why: Bible Doctrines Made Understandable to the Man on the Street. By Leslie Woodson. Grand Rapids: Zondervan Publishing House, 1972. 195 pp. Paper, $1.95.

The subtitle of this work aptly describes its contents. In twelve chapters, the author presents a simple, uncluttered treatment of all the major areas of theology. In addition to the doctrines normally covered in a theological study, there are helpful studies in sociology, ecology, and astrology. The author, who is presently pastor of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and who serves as President of the Board of Directors of Good News, a form for Scriptural Christianity within the United Methodist Church, evidences a high regard for the inspiration and authority of the Scripture. He endorses a premillennial, pretribulational eschatology. Reading this volume will provide a good introduction to Christian doctrine and will whet the appetite for a more technical and detailed study of the same.

Basic Bible Doctrine: A Programmed Text. By Houston T. Eldridge. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1970. 58 pp. Paper, $.95.

Like other programmed texts, this booklet teaches by asking questions and then offering several possible answers. The reader chooses one, turns to the page referred to, and moves on to the next question. Supplementary material gives added help, and each part closes with a thought-provoking test.

There are two parts: “Man’s Complete Ruin in Sin” and “God’s Remedy in Christ.” The author’s stated purpose is to help Christians understand the gospel and the basic doctrines connected with it. He achieves this purpose admirably.

One could confidently give this excellent book to an intelligent new convert as a first follow-up exercise.

The Prince of Darkness. By Fredk. A. Tatford. Eastbourne, Sussex: Prophetic Witness Publishing House, n.d. Paper, 118 pp. n.p.

This little volume presents the conflict of the ages between God and Satan. It really represents a survey of Scripture showing Satan’s struggle against the Almighty and the ultimate victory of God over Satan and his hosts.

In the process of his development, the author reveals his belief in the gap theory of Genesis 1:1–2, the “Sons of God” in Genesis 6 as angels, Christ’s literal journey and proclamation to the spirits in prison (1 Peter 3), and the Church as ...
