Israel in the Plan of God. By David Baron. Grand Rapids: Kregel Publications, 1983. 320 pp. $12.95.

Published originally in 1925 under the title The History of Israel, this classic has now been reissued and made available to a new generation. The author, a Russian by birth, reared in the strict traditions of a Jewish family, was early converted to Christianity. His lifelong ministry was to explain Christian truth to Jews and to educate Christians regarding Israel. In describing God’s past and future work for Israel, he extols the grace of God and God’s faithfulness to His promises to Israel. For all those interested in biblical prophecy and the future of Israel, this book will contribute much insight.

Overcoming the Adversary. By Mark I. Bubeck. Chicago: Moody Press, 1984. 130 pp. Paper, $5.95.

Bubeck is pastor of Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. This book is a sequel to his earlier volume, The Adversary. This volume emphasizes the place of prayer in overcoming Satan. Attention is given to Satan’s power, the believer’s union with Christ, and the personal work of the Holy Spirit. Most of the book is a discussion of the believer’s need to put on the armor of God described in Ephesians 6. Many illustrations are

given from the author’s own experience in dealing with those under satanic attack.

Crisis Experiences. By Erroll Hulse. Haywards Heath, Sussex: Carey Publications. 140 pp. Paper, $5.75.

Hulse examines many Scripture passages to show that the Bible records no post-conversion crisis experience which charismatics refer to as “the baptism in the Spirit.” Hulse holds that believers are baptized in the Spirit at the time of salvation because they have been regenerated, sealed, indwelt, and anointed by Him. One chapter compares the Holy Spirit’s work in the Old Testament with His work in the New. Unfortunately the book makes no mention of the fact that the baptizing work of the Holy Spirit is unique to the New Testament. The work is recommended, especially for laymen.
