It happened regularly. Jesus worked on the Sabbath. His opponents objected because they believed that what he was doing violated the Scriptures, at least as they interpreted them. On one occasion, when he healed a man who could not walk (John 5:1–15), they began to persecute him (v. 16). Jesus defended himself in several ways. First, he claimed to be doing only what he had seen the Father do; specifically, as the Father has raised the dead, so will the Son. He declared the good news: “All who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out” (v. 28). Second, he claimed that he is the one revealed in the Scriptures. He explicitly rebuked their reading of the Scriptures when he said, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (vv. 39–40).
