The Bible begins with a simple sentence: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1). The one who had no beginning is the cause of everything that has a beginning. The author of Genesis elsewhere confesses, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Ps 90:2). What an amazing thought; the self-existent and self-sufficient one brought the universe into existence. And his work was very good (Gen 1:31).
The good world that God created is no longer good. Because of rebellion, sin entered into this world and brought death and all of its effects. After millennia of expectation, Jesus is born: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . . Through him all things were made” (John 1:1, 3). Jesus, the Son of God, is the Creator. God became one of us to provide salvation for his fallen creation. His promise “I am making everything new” (Rev 21:5) provides hope. In a world that seems to be out of control, we can trust in the everlasting God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and his promise that he is making everything new.
