The Bible is God’s word, breathed out by God (2 Tim 3:16). Because God is truth, Scripture speaks truthfully about everything it addresses, and it speaks with divine authority. The Bible is trustworthy. It provides wisdom for living, defines and defends the character of God, and promises eternal life to those who believe in Jesus. The Bible is a grand story of redemption. It includes a number of genres, including historical narrative, wisdom, poetry, predictive prophecy, gospels, epistles, and apocalyptic, all telling how God is acting in the world to redeem his creation. It was written by about forty authors over 1500 years in a variety of historical, geographical, and cultural contexts. Yet, because of the superintending work of the Spirit, it tells one story. The story of Scripture ends with the promise that in the eschaton, those who trust Christ for salvation will experience the joy of living forever with our Savior on a new earth, recreated from the one that was cursed back in the garden. The promise Jesus made is true: “I am making everything new!” (Rev 21:5). There is no greater story than this.
