In a constantly changing world, where consistency and constancy seem to be legends from a bygone day, Christians can trust the reliability and faithfulness of God and his revelation. In Psalm 119:89, the psalmist confessed, “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens” (NIV). God’s Word reveals the characteristics of its author; God’s nature guarantees its reliability. God is eternal; he has neither beginning nor end. His Word, too, is eternal. Although the Bible was written by human authors superintended by the Spirit, as asserted by the doctrine of the inspiration of the words of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16), those words are God’s words and thus eternal. God’s Word comes from an eternal God and can be trusted.

God is eternal and so he is also faithful. The psalmist continued, “Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures” (Ps 119:90, NIV). God’s character is consistent, his plans for his creation are firmly established, and his faithfulness can be trusted. God’s revelation in creation can be trusted because it comes from a God who can be trusted. God’s revelation in creation is consistent with his revelation in his Word. We can have total confidence in this trustworthy God and his faithfulness. In a world that seems out of control, the God who created it is faithful to his promises. This is the ground of our hope and trust.
