From The Editor
With this issue we conclude our series commemorating Dallas Theological Seminary’s centennial by honoring the fourth editor of the journal after DTS purchased it in 1936. We share an article by Roy B. Zuck, first published in 1984. Zuck was born in Phoenix in 1932 and attended Biola College (now University). He earned ThM and ThD degrees at DTS before moving to Illinois, where he became an editor for Scripture Press. He became Vice President and served there until 1973. At the request of President John Walvoord, Zuck returned to Dallas to serve as assistant professor of Bible Exposition and associate dean, as well as associate editor of Bibliotheca Sacra. He became senior editor in 1986 and served until his death in 2013.
In this article, “The Role of the Holy Spirit in Hermeneutics,” Zuck’s passion for biblical hermeneutics is on full display. Because evangelicals believe in the inerrancy and authority of the Scriptures, proper interpretation is key. Often overlooked, he argues, is the role of the Holy Spirit in the process. Since the Spirit is the source of the Scriptures, the Spirit is also intimately involved in the hermeneutical process. Zuck provides fourteen propositions to help biblical interpreters have confidence in the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the art and science of interpretation.
