Founded in 1843 in New York City at Union Theological Seminary, Bibliotheca Sacra was purchased by the Evangelical Theological College in 1934. The College, renamed Dallas Theological Seminary in 1936, has been the home of the journal since then—ninety years of continuous publication. Dallas Theological Seminary is celebrating its centennial in 2024. In commemoration of this milestone, the four issues of the journal in this year will include reprints of articles written by the first four editors.
Rollin Thomas Chafer served as editor from 1934 until his death in 1939. Rollin studied at Princeton Theological Seminary and pastored several churches while also speaking at Bible conferences and institutes. In 1925 he moved to Dallas to join his brother, Lewis Sperry Chafer, at the recently founded seminary. In addition to editing Bibliotheca Sacra and other seminary publications, he served at Dallas Theological Seminary as registrar, secretary to the faculty and to the boards of the seminary, and he taught courses in hermeneutics, apologetics, and church government.
In this issue is a reprint of work by Chafer on hermeneutics originally published in 1937. In this essay he argues, against critics of the Bible, that proper hermeneutics must include some understanding of logic, since the biblical authors wrote in accordance with the principles of logic.
