In 2024, Dallas Theological Seminary celebrates one hundred years of training godly servant leaders. In this issue we are reprinting an article from 1952 by John F. Walvoord, the third editor of the journal after DTS purchased it in 1936.
Walvoord was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He graduated from Wheaton College before attending the Evangelical College, now DTS, where he earned ThB, ThM, and ThD degrees. He also earned an MA in philosophy from Texas Christian University. He served as a member of the faculty at DTS from 1936 to 1986, including seven years as Dr. Chafer’s assistant. After Chafer’s death, Walvoord served as president of DTS from 1952 to 1986, then as chancellor until 2001, and chancellor emeritus until his death in 2002.
In this article, “Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?,” Walvoord’s love for and confidence in the Scriptures, which marked his life and ministry, are on full display. He carefully and clearly responds to contemporary challenges to the Bible’s inspiration, and his answers are timely still. He concludes with a stirring affirmation of the Bible’s inspiration from his teacher and mentor, Lewis Sperry Chafer. From its beginning, DTS has been known for its commitment to the infallible and inerrant Word of God, and Walvoord’s apologetic for the Scriptures represents that view well.
