Words Baptists Do Not Use

AFFUSION (uh-FYOO-zhuhn): a pouring of water over a candidate for baptism instead of immersing him.

AVE MARIA (AH-vay mah-REE-ah): Latin for the “Hail Mary” of the Rosary; often set to music.

BAPTISMAL REGENERATION (bap-TIZ-muhl ri-jen-ur-AY-shuhn): the teaching that a person receives eternal life when sprinkled or immersed in water.

CHANCEL (CHAN-suhl): that part of a church reserved for the use of the clergy. Scripture does not recognize “sacred” spots in churches nor exclusive degrees of difference among believers.

CHRISTEN (KRIS’n): to make one a Christian, that is, to baptize (usually only to sprinkle); usually also to give a name; used only by those who believe in baptismal regeneration.

EUCHARIST (YOO-kuh-rist) : a sacramental name for the body and blood of Christ as seen in the bread and cup of communion. Scripture considers this a memorial only.

EXISTENTIAL (eg-zis-TEN-shuhl): teaching which stresses the inner subjective awareness of man; it may or may not include religious awareness, and often includes denial of the objective reality of the conversion experience.

EXTREME UNCTION (eks-TREEM UHNGK-shuhn): final anointing just prior to death to achieve (sacramentally) forgiveness for all sins. Scripture teaches that forgiveness follows confession, not anointing.

FATHER (FAH-thur): used by some i...
