On the Bible, America was founded. With the Bible, America was built. Because of the Bible, America chose the high road of morality and idealism. To the Bible, America gave her devotion and bright hopes of a worthwhile future. At the Bible, America brought up the young that-they might learn of their Creator, Friend, and Guide. For the Bible, America was willing to throw off the shackles of traditions and tyranny. Under the control of the Bible, America demanded that her leaders believe in and follow God and her teachers teach the ways of God’s Book. In 1976 America needs to return to this Book with a most solemn affirmation that this was and ever shall be the nation’s Book, our Magna Charta in spiritual things and plan for the future.

America And Its Convictions

On these a nation will stand or fall. The gifted and good founders of our country followed most closely the precepts and principles of the Bible. They stood tall, erect, and strong in those standards. In all our celebrations there should be a special place for their same convictions.

There was the conviction that God Himself had guided our fathers across unchartered seas to hew out a pilgrim land in a wilderness. There was the firm belief that His grace was sufficient to plant the seeds of a righteous nation. The Of Plymouth Plantation of Bradford stands as a timeless monument to this noble and ennobling truth. Again, there was the unswerving conviction that the colonials would be answerable to Almighty God for what they held most dear, how they lived, and what they bequeathed to their children. This needs to be reawakened in 1976. Again, there was the great concept that righteous men should man the pulpits and the stations of government and court life. It could not be a nation under God unless it was under the sway of the Bible of God, under the dominion of His grace and under the continuing mercies of the Lord. Shall we witness a return to these mighty convictions in A.D. 1976? Perhaps the more sensitive and Christianized will heed. Perhaps the grace of God will open more eyes that some revival movements will bring a segment of the citizenry to its knees and to His throne. December 31, 1976 will tell the somber and sobering story whether America has regained its landmark convictions or whether it has had another debacle with drink, amusements, and moneymaking.

America And Its Character

Not even a casual reader of our history could escape the mainline characteristic of the colonial fathers—that of hardline and rugged “white-hot mo...
