Discoveries From the Time of Jesus by Alan Millard, Winona Lake, IN: BMH Books, 2001, 189 pp., cloth, $29.95

Many popular-level books on archaeology and the Bible are rather shallow. This one breaks the mold. This book is no dry, technical treatise but an exciting re-telling of archaeological discoveries significant to the NT. One story, for example, is of the discovery of the “Jesus boat” in the Sea of Galilee.

The subject matter is organized in 6 sections: Daily Life, Rulers of the Land, Religion, Death and Burial, Writers (historians), and Gospel Records. The work is beautifully enhanced by a multitude of color pictures, side-bars, and diagrams. The text captures and holds the reader’s attention as it recounts the various finds of the Middle East.

This book is a good general introduction to the background of the NT. In the back, several other, more detailed sources are recommended.

The Rapture by Tim LaHaye, Eugene, OR: Harvest House, 2002, 255 pages, cloth, $16.99

This is an excellent and readable undated version of Rapture Under Attack Dr. LaHaye did some years earlier. It is a clear and cogent treatment of the rapture doctrine. The author deals with absurd and slanderous theories about the rapture doctrine that prove that many who oppose this biblical teaching are unaware of the clear biblical evidence. The book also deals with the fictional theory that the doctrine of the rapture began by a vision of a Scottish lass named Margaret MacDonald. The book is a must read for those who are unsure about this truth, and for those who love the blessed hope of the Lord’s appearing.

The Smell of Sawdust by Richard J. Mouw, Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2000, 152 pp., cloth, $14.99

This is a nostalgic walk through American church history of the early 1900s by the President of Fuller Seminary. The thought of tent revivals lead to the title. His purpose was to review the fundamentalist heritage. He asserts we can learn from our ancestor’s accomplishments and from their mistakes.
