America is currently torn by a kulturkampf. More precisely, it is riveted by a full scale “moral war” that is being waged from television screens to the halls of Congress, from the journals of science to the kitchen table, and from the offices of Madison Avenue to the pews of local churches.1 In this war, perhaps the hottest battle has to do with the definition, structure, and meaning of the family in America as reflected in law, public policy, education, business, the media, and popular opinion, to say nothing of the deeper dimensions of morality and faith. Tension is focused on the “traditional” family-the long-standing norm for family relationships built around a core consisting of two adults of the opposite sex living together in an exclusive, lifetime union, bearing unconditional responsibility to

care for one another and for any children they may conceive or add to their union by adoption.

Leading the attack against the traditional family are advocates seeking public approval and affirmation of a lifestyle based on homosexual relationships. These attackers would “deconstruct” the traditional family by realigning the legal, social, and moral definition of “family” to include any physically intimate living arrangement freely entered by those who wish to call themselves a family.2 The voices ...
