“Is the Bible by all this discovery hopelessly outmoded so that its teaching is untrue and therefore irrelevant? What does it say?”

These were the thought provoking questions placed before the Evangelical Theological Society membership and friends assembled at the 13th annual meeting in St. Louis, December 29 and 30, 1961, by Dr. R. Laird Harris. In his characteristic way our president demonstrated the need for re-examining and restating the Biblical teaching in the light of shabby substitutes in the area of Biblical cosmology offered by scholars who do not regard the Bible as reliable. Many of the problems raised in today’s dialogue regarding Biblical truths are reduced to their proper perspective as the assertions set forth in the Scriptures are interpreted in their normal setting.

The ETS was founded in 1949 by scholars from various theological persuasions and backgrounds with the one common denominator of accepting the inerrant Scriptures as the basis for scholarship. We do well to stimulate examination of current questions in theology, history, archaeology and other related fields as they are posed in today’s language. “What does the Bible say?” is the basic question to begin our study.

Through bur national and regional meetings we have opportunity to share with our fellow members the particular problems each of us seeks to examine in his area of study. Stimulating discussions should aid us in a keener analysis of these subjects.

The E.T.S. Bulletin is what we as members are determined to make it. Through the printed word we can share our findings not only with our membership but reach out to others with our scholarship grounded in the Word of God.

In behalf of our editorial committee let me share with you our concern to make the Bulletin an effective outreach of Evangelical scholarship. We appreciate your critical evaluation of each issue and will welcome your contributions toward a high standard of excellence. As papers of excellence come to us we have the opportunity to consider them for publication. May each member of the E. T. S. be alert to solicit and channel the fruits of scholarship from his varied contacts toward the end of making our Bulletin an effective means of serving this and coming generations in a scholarly interpretation of God’s written revelation to the human race.
