A 1 Peter Bibliography

Dennis Sylva*

Critical and comprehensive bibliographies are one of the primary resources for scholars in their attempt to advance their fields of study. They bring together the relevant literature from a variety of places. The works of W. Lyons and M. Parvis, B. Metzger, A. J. Mattill and M. B. Mattill, and J. T. Forestell have greatly facilitated scholarly discussion on NT works.1 This work belongs to this NT bibliographical tradition. A detailed search has made this by far the most comprehensive bibliography on critical works on 1 Peter from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to yet appear. It is my hope that it will facilitate the study of this “exegetical stepchild.” The reader will note that a good number of the studies cited deal with the “Christ’s-descent-among-the-dead” idea found in I Pet 3:19–20; 4:6. This tradition is found in other NT and early Christian works. It is only the 1 Peter passages, however, that appear to offer hope of salvation to those who have died in their sins. For this reason the passage has occasioned a great deal of exegetical effort.
