Abstract: Isaiah 7:14 remains one of the most debated verses in the Hebrew Bible, particularly regarding its citation in Matthew 1:23 as a prophecy fulfilled in the virgin birth of Jesus. Many scholars assert that the original context demands a historical fulfillment during the reigns of Ahaz and Hezekiah, thereby making Matthew’s reading appear nonliteral or typological at best. This article challenges that consensus by arguing that Matthew’s use of Isaiah 7:14 reflects the literal sense of the verse when interpreted within the literary and compositional structure of the book of Isaiah. After surveying common objections and evaluating two prominent Christian attempts to explain Matthew’s use of Isaiah 7:14—the double fulfillment theory and the two-child hypothesis—the article proposes a text-centered approach. By reading Isaiah 7 in light of its placement within Isaiah 2–12, a section framed by eschatological hope and messianic expectation, the article shows that Isaiah 7:14 anticipates a future, miraculous birth. Moreover, close attention to linguistic features and to the recurring imagery of destruction and renewal reveals that Isaiah presents a coherent vision of messianic hope, with the Immanuel prophecy as an integral part of that vision. In this light, Matthew’s interpretation emerges not as an apostolic imposition but as a faithful exposition of Isaiah’s intended message.
