Giving Thanks

It is with a deep sense of gratitude that Christians for Biblical Equality express thanks to Gretchen Gaebelein Hull for eleven years of service as editor of Priscilla Papers.

Truly, Gretchen Gaebelein Hull established a high standard for CBE’s scholarly journal. The thoughtful, well-expressed arguments on behalf of biblical equality in the church concerning gender, race, class, and age have been without peer. We know all in CBE join in thanking Gretchen for the many ways Priscilla Papers brought healing, hope, clarity, understanding, and reconciliation throughout the church on many shores.

Gretchen’s scholarship on behalf of biblical equality is extensive. She is author of Equal to Serve, a CBE bestseller for many years; Equal to Serve was reprinted by Baker Books in 1998. Gretchen was a contributing author to The Global God (Baker, 1998), Applying the Scriptures (Zondervan, 1987), and Women, Authority, and the Bible (InterVarsity Press, 1986). She is author of The ABC’s of Gender Equality, and a contributor to The Women’s Study Bible. She is a coauthor of the Statement on Men, Women, and Biblical Equality (CBE, 1989). Her articles have appeared in various Christian magazines, including Christianity Today, Perspectives, and Church & Society.

Gretchen has received recognition from many organizations for her leadership, including: an honorary doctorate from Houghton College in 1995, and a Stanley Distinguished Scholar Lecturer award. Her presentations at colleges, seminaries, and conferences in the United States, Australia, England, and Canada have had the special emphasis of justice issues, particularly justice for women.

A member of the founding board of Christians for Biblical Equality, Gretchen currently serves on the boards of Evangelicals for Social Action and Presbyterians for Renewal. She is an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA.

Gretchen is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and has studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Philosophy.

Thanks is also due Tina Ostrander, who so ably served as assistant editor from 1997 to 1999, and as interim editor for the last three issues of Priscilla Papers. Tina’s technological skills and biblical scholarship strengthened Priscilla Papers in many ways. The CBE community wishes to thank Tina for her dedication, scholarship, and vision. Tina holds a B.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a master’s degree in Theology from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.
