Gerhard Charles Aalders

WE NOTE WITH regret the passing of Gerhard Charles Aalders on 30th January, 1961. Prof. Aalders was born in London on 25th March 1880, his mother being English and his father Dutch. From 1903-20 he served as a minister of the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands, while from 1920-50 he was professor of Old Testament and of practical theology in the Free University of Amsterdam. He was a prolific writer, and is possibly best known in English-speaking countries from his The Problem of the Book of Jonah and A Short Introduction to the Pentateuch. He wrote several commentaries which have not been translated. He was active in the wider affairs of the church, particularly in youth work and in charitable organisations. He was a profound scholar, widely read and fair to those from whom he disagreed. Above all he was loyal to the message of the Bible, and we shall miss his stalwart contributions.
