A Bibliography Of The Writings Of Geerhardus Vos (1862-1949)

James T. Dennison, Jr.

Recently, several lists of the writings of Professor Vos have been prepared. In 1969, a bibliography was compiled by Michael Smith of Westminster Theological Seminary. This catalogue was supplemented by K. M. Campbell in the appendix to the English translation of Vos’ 1891 rectoral address on the covenant which was delivered at the Theological School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In addition, a list of Vos’ writings may be gathered from “The Biblical Theology of Geerhardus Vos.” by John F. Jansen.1 Finally, Mr. Peter De Klerk, theological Librarian of Calvin Theological Seminary, has compiled a bibliography of the writings of all professors at Calvin Seminary in preparation for that school’s Centennial celebration. With the exception of the work of Mr. De Klerk (with whom I have exchanged entries), all the above lists contain significant omissions.

The list presented here is as complete as possible thanks to the assistance of many persons. First, Professor Vos’ daughter, Mrs. William (Marianne) Radius of Grand Rapids, was most cooperative. Dr. Johannes G. Vos, son of the late Professor, also gave direction. The help of staff members of Calvin College & Seminary Library, Mr. Marvin E. Monsma, Director, was indispensable. Finally, Dr. Richard B. Gaffin, Jr. of Westminster Theological Seminary, Mr. David Coffin and my brother, Mr. William Dennison have rendered encouragement and assistance.

In the process of gathering these bibliographical references, several manuscripts of Professor Vos were providentially recovered. The significance of this material cannot be minimized. It includes: his personal sermon notebook which contains nine

handwritten sermons which were each in Princeton Seminary Chapel during the period 1902–1914; a handwritten copy of a sermon on Isaiah 6; two fragmentary copies of an apparently extensive work on Old Testament Eschatology (the complete text has been lost).

It is hoped that this bibliography will be the harbinger of a collection of Geerhardus Vos’ shorter writings. A project of precisely this nature is being undertaken by Professor Gaffin with the cooperation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Company. The proposed volume will include many longer and shorter biblical studies as well as selected sermons, addresses, and reviews.
