Bruce K. Waltke and Ivan D. V. De Silva, Proverbs: A Shorter Commentary. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2021. Pp. xxviii + 472. $38.00, paper.
This commentary is a one-volume, condensed version of Bruce Waltke’s more technical, two-volume commentary in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series, first published in 2004. Many readers of this journal will already be aware of Dr. Waltke’s writings, including his reputation for being a careful and helpful commentator. This is certainly the case with his monumental work on Proverbs, though the amount of technical information might be too much for someone looking for a quick answer, or someone with limited knowledge of Hebrew. This commentary therefore makes the larger commentary more accessible for a wider audience, including pastors. (Eerdmans did something similar in 2015 with a condensation of G. K. Beale’s massive commentary on Revelation.)
However, this new edition of Proverbs is not simply an abridgement; it also updates the original commentary with new insights from recent literature that was not available for the first edition (especially Michael Fox’s commentary on Prov 10–31), as well as some passages where Waltke revises some of his earlier positions. These are limited in scope, however, and the authors state that the new research does not significantly affect the substance of the commentary. Further, this remains a substantive commentary on its own (the introduction, for example, runs to 62 pages), and readers will still encounter some Hebrew. This volume concludes with an author index, a Scripture index, and a subject index. Anyone teaching or studying Proverbs will find this to be an indispensable resource. I am grateful that this new edition is now available.

The covers have been redesigned, but the content remains apparently the same. The series is explicitly focused on engaging in biblical
