Richard B. Gaffin Jr., In the Fullness of Time: An Introduction to the Biblical Theology of Acts and Paul. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2022. Pp. 448. $44.99, cloth.

As a rule, the WTJ does not review or provide short notices of books written or edited by professors at Westminster Theological Seminary. In this case, an exception is being made, for the publication of Richard Gaffin’s In the Fullness of Time is a momentous achievement. This volume marks the collection and publication of Gaffin’s mature thoughts on Acts and Paul, deriving from his teaching on the topic at Westminster Seminary for over forty years.

Readers of this volume will find vintage Gaffin-on-Paul collected together in one place: the role of Pentecost, resurrection and eschatological structure of New Testament theology, historia salutis and ordo salutis, Christ as life-giving Spirit, the place of Acts in redemptive history, an integrated biblical and systematic-theological approach—all this and more is on display. Former students of Gaffin and those familiar with his thought will find here exegetical insights clearly presented. Those who are less familiar with Gaffin’s theology of Paul (which builds heavily on Vos and Ridderbos) will find here material that will stoke further reflection. Thankfully, this book features both a subject and a Scripture index, which will aid in its use as a reference work. Gaffin’s volume is well deserving of a spot on one’s New Testament bookshelf.
